Proposal Plans Fail As Crane Destroys Home in The Netherlands

You’ve herd of crazy dutch people, but this one takes it a step further, watch the video below of a Mobile Crane as it topples in to an innocent home causing major damage.

The man who rented the crane was planning to use it to lower himself over his girlfriends house and in to her garden to surprise her and propose to her, unfortunately however, before that, the crane toppled over smashing in to a nearby neighbours home causing catastrophic damage.

So far neighbours have been evacuated while the crane remains still lying on the house while emergency services figure out how to pull it out without it falling over again.

Roller Pinch Bars For Lifting Loads

Steerman Roller Pinch Bar

Steerman Roller Pinch Bar

Roller Pinch Bars otherwise known as a crow bar with fitted with smooth rolling wheels to enable minimal damage to the surface one is lifting on. With standard capacities up to 5 Tonnes roller crow bars can be used to provide that initial step in to jacking up the load in order to insert toe jacks for a higher lift and slide in a set of load skates. Without them where do you start?

Available widely usually in 1500kg or 5000kg capacities offering a broad range of options and applications- do be advised however the 5Tonne models are rather heavy! Manufactured from high grade steel coated in a safety yellow colour accompanied by robust, heavy duty steel wheels, combined they offer a super low toe height providing easy of entry and usability.

When it comes to load moving however, Steerman are the only brand for me. Offering high quality British engineering with reasonably quick lead times on most of their equipment, I love knowing that when a bearing or wheel goes on my skates (because lets face it if your using them regularly in industrial environments things may wear) they are always available right from stock overnight in the UK. You don’t get that with cheap imported alternatives, past experience has lead me to choose quality and durability over price.

New Demag V-Type Overhead Crane Design

V type Overhead Crane DemagRecently posted through my door was the industry wide ‘Lift & Hoist International’ magazine to which I dived straight in to and am delighted to share with you one of the most interesting and revolutionary ideas brought to the table by globally recognised ‘Demag Cranes & Components’.

Recently acquired by the Terex group; Demag are regarded as one of the best. Manufacturing only the highest quality cranes featuring the latest technology, the reason these are not the cheapest on the market is simply down to the astronomical amount of dedicated research and development that goes in to every Demag product.

The V-Type overhead crane design is set to change the way manufacturers develop cranes FOREVER! Boasting lightweight revolutionary design combined with double service life, improved efficiency, improved safety, higher load capacity and reduced oscillation by 30%. The height of the new Demag V-Type height can be adjusted in fine increments enabling precise positioning when installing. Less wheel pressure meaning less wear and tear on some of the vital and most expensive components is always a bonus for buyers of the new V-Type crane.

Used Cranes- How, What, Where; The Ultimate Buyers Guide

Buying a Used Crane is not something many of us do every day. In this short guide I aim to outline a few things when it comes to making that big decision on the gamble of a Used Crane over a new one!

Old Used CraneAge- I know as the old saying goes ‘age isn’t everything’ however with Used Cranes it kind of is, in fact it will pay dividends to buy the newest crane you can, you just have to be savvy to get the right price. As you can imagine with common sense I am sure, a newer crane will last longer (providing it was of decent quality to begin with). You should aim to purchase something up to 15 years old if you want it to really last you the next 15-20 years or so, and that really is achievable, provided you choose a reputable manufacturer then you will be able to get spare parts for the next 50 years or so, realistically you could own this crane for up to 50 years if good care and maintenance is undertaken, form a good relationship with your supplier and negotiate a preferential rate on servicing of your crane, after all they will want to secure your ongoing business, remember stay savvy when punting for a Used Crane, it’s a lot like buying a used car or machinery.

Brand Awareness- As I am sure you are aware salesman will do anything to get your money in some cases, choosing a reputable brand is important, don’t let anyone steer you in to a brand nobody recognises as this will cause havoc when you need to replace worn parts, check the manufacturer is still in business before considering any crane as many come and go over the years. Reputable brands that I can recommend are: Stahl, Demag, Kone, Verlinde, Fellows Stringer, Street, Abus, Morris (out of business, however spare parts still easily located), there are a few others but if you have any you wish to run by me then please feel free to comment, send me images and I will let you know my personal opinion on the crane you are thinking of buying.

Lifestyle of The Crane- This is very important, if your being offered a crane that worked in a foundry but has recently been painted you may want to look in to this further as it’s likely to have had a tough life. If your crane has worked in a glass factory it’s quite likely that it has been used to its capacity however it’s probably been in a clean environment and always been cared for.

Used Crane MaintenanceMaintenance Records- Maintenance records for Used Cranes can reveal a lot to a buyer, these will be official documents from an inspection body and there should be one document for each year that the crane has been inspected (LOLER regulations require 12 monthly inspections on Overhead Cranes) this report will outline any defects found with the crane. One can quite easily infer from these reports as to how the crane has been maintained. For example if the report in 2013 states that there is a gearbox leak and that the gearbox has low oil levels and that immediate action should be taken and the same again in 2014 then it’s evident that the recommended maintenance has not been undertaken. However this is not everything, just something to consider, minor things like this may not even impact the crane significantly however it is always advised that you ask the questions and put your mind at ease. It can be a painful wait for your Used Crane especially if you have not seen it before.

Used Crane DealerThe Dealer- What do you know about your crane dealer? Always check that they are a reputable company that has been around for some time, ask them for case studies on their previous supply if in doubt, note that a reputable dealer will show evidence of supply on their website, if they don’t it is a sign that they are probably not the kind of crane dealer you want to be buying from as you never know, three months down the line they could be gone, your five tonne crane you picked up for £3,000 cash now has no warranty and your stuck with no one familiar to assist and of course that means approaching a servicing company that will certainly not offer preferential rates should you be experiencing a breakdown. Remember a cheap crane is not always the best deal, think long term and save your company money, time, stress and downtime. If you want my advice I have purchased many Used Cranes in the past and have always used a company called Crane Handling in Stourbridge, UK. A professional and friendly team who have always been fair with me on price, their connections in the crane industry are global and not only have I used them for supply but also for the maintenance over the past 8 years, I never even have to pick the phone up to them they just drop me an email every 12 months and arrange a convenient date, the last thing I wanted was to be confused by having several different crane companies doing different jobs such as one to supply, one to install, one to test and one to maintain.

If you need any advice on a Used Overhead Crane you are considering purchasing then please feel free to leave a comment and I will let you know my honest opinion.

Electric Chain Hoists for Wind Farm Maintenance

GIS Specialist GCH WIND Wind Turbine Hoist featuring cone to cover the hook when hoisting to prevent snagging as well as a unique chain collector, upper & lower limits and much more

GIS Specialist GCH WIND Wind Turbine Hoist featuring cone to cover the hook when hoisting to prevent snagging as well as a unique chain collector, upper & lower limits and much more

Whether it be lifting tools or shifting components in order to maintain the modern day wind turbines which are rapidly popping up just about everywhere, the Electric Chain Hoist is perfectly suited to the job, however not just any hoist, only few will do!

The one of two that fits the bill is the Lodestar Electric Chain Hoist, the second of the two is a GIS Electric Chain Hoist (GIS also offer a special GCH WIND model hoist which is actually designed for the wind turbine market) the Swiss manufactured hoist is a favourite among many in the market (The Lodestar is manufactured in Virginia, USA).

A hoist to fit the requirement will need to run three phase power (you can run single phase but you will have to take many breaks as the motor gets hotter faster- you have a lower duty rating with single phase hoists) the hoist will need long heights of lift maybe up to 120m, dual speed hoisting operation with hook suspension (or other depending on the application). Many will request stainless chains but this is not necessary and is very expensive/impossible at this height of lift, simply lubricate and you will be fine.

An idea for cost, something like this will most likely be in the region of £2,500.00-£5,000.00 per unit ($4,215.00-$8,430.00).

Pop-Up Whyte & Mackay Whiskey Bar in a Port-Side Crane!

Image

Whyte & Mackay Pop-up Whiskey Bar Inside 107 Year Old Crane!

Legendary whiskey makers Whyte & Mackay open a sky-high bar situated 150 feet up inside a Tower/Jib Crane located in Glasgow to commemorate their 170th anniversary! -Sounds good to me!!

The luxury ‘pop-up’ bar is no modesty with its unique setting and fascinating intricate engineered structure which by the way is 107 years old!! The bar is thoughtfully positioned in what used to be the wheelhouse of this incredible machine. Named “The Lions Clide” taken from its traditional Scottish heritage boasts incredible views of the River Clyde and surrounding areas of Glasgow- you really can see for miles!

Sadly you wont get chance to visit again as this was only open from the 2-6th of June (yes really I should have given a heads up!!) This exclusive bar can comfortably accommodate up to 8 drinkers at a time next to the brick walls and roaring log fire- cosy!!

The main reason for the whole event is that Whyte & Mackay was founded on the Glasgow Docks in 1844 by James Whyte and Charles Mackay.

Summer Roofing And Height Safety

Summer is here and there is no better time than now to fix up that old broken roof that has been leaking all winter.

Roofing Height Safety KitMany factors should be considered when re-roofing ones home from the size of the tile to your personal safety at such a height. The tile should match your current roof as best as you can, roofing tiles start from as little as 25p each so unless you have a mansion (and there for I doubt you will be doing this yourself) no expense should be spared in the quality to ensure a tight sealed roof that will last for years to come.

Further from the quality and design of your roofing tiles one should take a serious consideration as to the type of safety equipment used at height such as harness kits and fall arrest equipment to ensure that there is absolutely no risk of fatal injury by fall, obviously there are certain steps that cannot be undertaken to prevent that small graze to your arm should you slip, however at least you’ll not break anything or worse risk death.

One should choose a suitable harness that supports and protects you to an adequate standard, this does not mean you need to go out and purchase a fully blown riggers harness for £200 or so, a simple two point safety harness will provide you with a two point connection with safety shoulder straps and a couple ‘D’ rings to enable you to connect yourself up to a rope, lanyard, fall arrest block or webbing strap to secure yourself and prevent a fall. There are a number of ‘off the shelf’ roofers height safety packages available online, perform a simple web search and you’ll find the kit you need, look to pay around £150 for a full kit, consider it an insurance premium that will never let you down, £150 to save a life certainly outweighs the heartbreak of your family and friends if something happened.

Chain Hoists and Rigging Motors EVERYWHERE!

This past weekend we visited the O2 arena in London, needless to say it was heaving! Not only with people but also with rigging motors and electric chain hoists, literally everywhere, holding up signs, screens, trussing, lighting, speakers to name but a few!

This really goes to show that there is no lack in the market for requirement as there are hundreds of these mega arenas all around the country such as football clubs and even airports, this is great for the market and the industries economy as I am confident it is on the rise, all of my contacts across the market tell me nothing but positive things with steady growth. As it has it I was contacted by a university doing a survey on the market, it was very in depth and lasted around 40 minutes, every kind of question was asked and my opinion was noted, at the end the lady provided me with feedback on what other people had been saying, it was very positive and a steady growth year on year until 2020 was predicted which is nothing but good news for everyone in sales and hire of rigging gear.

I was amazed at the site of all these hoists and the technical rigging that goes in to these systems, the guys that set them up are very talented and deserve much credit, hats off!

Mobile Cranes for Installing a Hot Tub!

So as life moves on you tend to buy different things, I for one enjoy a dip in a Hot Tub and decided that after much anticipation I would go ahead and get one, there was lots to consider, the size, where I would install it, what would my partner think? After all they are not cheap!

Image

Hot Tub all rigged up! They lifted the tub using 2 x 3Tonne Webbing slings attached to another 2

The biggest issue was- how am I going to get it in to my back yard? The house is tall and there is no way of walking it round on trolleys. There was only one way, this also was not the cheapest, but we had no option and are glad to say everything went smoothly and swiftly.

Ainscough Crane Hire of Lancashire provided us with the most competitive price on the market for hire of a 35 Tonne crane with a lifting height of 44m, enough to get us over the house and in to the back yard, perfect. It was great to watch the crane do its thing as for being in the industry this was exciting for an engineering geek to see!

All plumed in and full up with water, it was time to add the chemicals and let it simmer, within 24 hours it was heated and ready for action, I had not seen myself so excited for years!

Offshore Rigging- Whats it really like?

Offshore Rigging can be a really exciting but also challenging job, however with some rewarding prospects such as high salaries with long holiday periods (but also intense working periods). Although living in the middle of the ocean on a windy oil rig is not the most beautiful of places one can still live with plenty of luxury, accommodation is thought to be somewhat as good as that of a five star hotel, bar the room service and beach! If you get seasickness- this ones not for you!

Offshore RiggingMany offshore riggers only pursue their career for a short period of time, this is most likely because they have either earnt enough money to be comfortable and enjoy life or they felt enough was enough and its time to do something else. Often I see ex riggers becoming rigging equipment salespersons or persons who are involved less directly and not actually out on the rigs miles out at sea away from their families and friends for extended periods.

The excitement of playing what is practically real life Meccano does look like something that would make any boy in to a man, that satisfaction you get from Meccano times by a million as you play it on a huge scale, that right there is every young boys dream! We’ll never grow up…

I don’t think I will ever get to experience life on deck Offshore simply because I love my home comforts too much- however I would take the opportunity for the weekend to be an Offshore Rigger and live life on the edge, I think it would be rather thrilling, what do you think??
