Jib Crane Terminology

Jib Cranes can become slightly confusing when it comes to making your first purchase as factory management it is your responsibility to ensure everything goes to plan, so reading this article will help you get to grips with Swing Jibs and ensure you pick the right one!

Firstly there is the type of Jib Crane, will you be floor mounting or wall mounting?

Types of Jib Cranes

Free Standing- When specifying a free standing jib crane the jib arm is supported by a floor mounted support, this is secured by chemical anchors that are fitted to the ground and base plate. These can be over-braced or Under-braced, if headroom issues are bound to occur (meaning you do not have enough room above the jib arm to fit the crane) under-braced ensures that the total height of the crane is no taller than the required hook path (height of lift).

Wall Mounted- The name is self explanatory, easily mounted to a wall using fixing stirrups or chemical resin anchors, giving more room on the floor of the production line. Additional height of lift can be achieved at a better cost without the need for tall columns for mounting.

Jib Cranes can have up to 360 degrees of manual or electric slew in order to efficiently and effectively reach material and lift up to 10 Tonnes. For more information and competitive quotations on Donati Swing Jib Cranes please visit Crane Handling.

Used Cranes For Sale

With budgets being squeezed every year it gets harder and harder for a company’s purchasing department to justify brand new purchases of large plant and machinery equipment.

This is why Crane Handling moved into the Used Cranes market around 7 years ago. Diversifying from manufacturing of brand new cranes to fabrication adjustments and refurbishment of used cranes. Used Cranes are very popular among companies big or small looking to save money in order to meet their budget for the year.

To give you an idea of how much can really be saved take this large crane as an example:

A new 600Tonne Gantry Crane 120m Span 80m Height of Lift price new is around £20Million, price ‘used’ with under 5 hours usage £8Million. As you can see, there are BIG savings to be made on used cranes. This crane would have a lead time of 2 years to manufacture, we have it Ex Stock!

Used Cranes big or small carry many advantages over new such as:

  • Ex Stock- installation within 7 days on some used cranes
  • Custom Fabrication- many do not realise that used cranes can be adjusted to suit your requirements.
  • MASSIVE SAVINGS
  • No need to extract new raw materials- saving the world, now you can really feel good.
  • Flexible Payment Plans
  • View before you buy, something you can never do with new.

The list could continue but I just wanted to outline the basics, Crane Handling have a huge range of Used Cranes and Used Overhead Cranes for sale with stock held in the Midlands ready for viewing.

Productivity- How To Increase It With A Jib Crane

No company likes to have low productivity rates but sometimes this cannot be helped, for example if you have one overhead crane operating and more than one machine to load at a time such as a group of CNC machines. Each operator has to wait his turn to use the overhead crane to load his machine. This can be easily combatted with the addition of jib cranes. Each machine can have its own dedicated jib crane for a lot less than the cost of one overhead crane. This enables all CNC machines to be loaded at the same time increasing productivity straight away. Another advantage is value for money, more products being manufactured in less time means your employees become worth more to you making your company more successful.

Jib cranes are a lightweight alternative to heavy duty electric overhead travelling cranes. Easily installed and easy to maintain, if one jib breaks down it only leaves one machine and worker out of production, the rest are free to continue. If your one overhead cranes breaks down it can leave your whole team out of production costing you time and money. You then become dependant on a crane service company to perform the repair, this may take time and unforeseen issues such as ordering and waiting for spare parts to arrive can occur thus costing you more time and money. Jib cranes counter act this (unless they all fail at once but this is pretty much unheard of).

Considerations to take into account when looking to purchase a jib crane are the following:

  • Capacity- maximum weight to lift, your crane and hoist will be rated to this.
  • Height of Lift- the distance between the load to be lifted and the underside of the jib arm.
  • Headroom- is there lighting/trussing above causing obstruction to an over-braced jib crane? If so the use of an under-braces solution should be suggested.
  • Floor/Wall conditions- if you are floor or wall mounting the jib you need to ensure the floor/wall is structurally sound by acquiring the services of a structural engineer.
  • Electricity Supply- if you require an electric slew or hoist you will require a local three phase power supply.

There are many factors to consider when looking for the suitable jib crane, all of which can be supplied and installed by jib crane experts Crane Handling.

Super Excellent Export

Export plays a big part of our business at Lifting Equipment Store, we export large quantities of lifting equipment every month to various repeat customers around the globe.

One of the things I have commonly experienced when ordering goods from abroad is that the suppliers do not package their pallets securely. This can lead to damaged goods and even missing goods, not ensuring your goods could cost you more than you expect and even if you do insure them if they are not packed correctly some insurance policies will be void. Even when you order UK to UK the packaging would not suffice any longer than overnight.

This is where we come in, before goods are shipped abroad when purchased from us we ensure that our export consignments are re-packed in suitable containers for export featuring tripple thick cardboard (or wooden containers), ISPM 15 Heat treated pallets (metal is also optional), All packing is re-enforced and wrapped. Then the boxes (or box) is banded and strapped to the pallet to ensure full security, after that the box/container is wrapped for extra protection and security.

We go the extra mile and ensure that your consignment is fully labelled and accompanied with the correct documentation: Packing list, Commercial Invoice, Certificate of Origin, Etc.

Check out how we packed this consignment of Lifting Equipment below. In this we have 80 x Container Lifting Lugs (2 layers), 20 x 7 Tonne Bow Shackles (1 layer), 20 x 7 Tonne Dee Shackles (1 Layer), 10 x Yale height safety kits with carrying cases (1 layer and extra two boxes on top). Weighing in at just over 1000kg (1 Tonne). It’s like wrapping a giant Lifting Equipment Christmas present!!….

How often do you lubricate your tackle?

It’s not what you were thinking, I’m talking about Lifting Tackle! This article explains how to correctly lubricate a chain block load chain.

The most common cause of rust and wear; Incorrect lubrication…

One of the most common problems that I see when people return chain blocks after a short time period is a dry load chain. A dry load chain that has been neglected from lubrication can cause more problems than most will imagine such as rusting and weakening of the load chain and internal components such as the chain guide and chain wheel causing avoidable replacements of vital components or worse, a new chain block, this could put you out of time and money and probably less than £3 could save you all the hassle.

Signs of incorrect or lack of lubrication can be creaking of the load chain when it is running over the lift wheel. In fact what you are really hearing is the load chain wearing its self out every time you use the hoist by friction welding the chain links together and breaking the weld due to the lack of lubricant between links.

Rusty Load Chain

Lubricate before it’s too late! The early signs of a neglected load chain.

types of lubrication; there are many different kinds on the market, many manufacturers will suggest alternative products to suit their chain blocks. The key is to ensure your lubricant contains an “EP” additive to make the lube suitable for extreme pressure. Without EP you will be unable to keep lubricant between links under full load.

Ideal methods of lubrication can vary from rigger to rigger however my chosen method is to drop the whole load chain into a bucket and pour over the lubricant (no need to have the chain swimming in it, just enough to evenly cover). Move the chain around to work the lubricant in between every link. Some people like to spray it straight on while the block is hanging upright but that doesn’t always get between all the links. After applying the lubricant hang the block upright and let it drip dry, save as much lubricant as you can and use it on your next block. Take a rag and remove any excess oil, when the block is upright hanging you will be unable to remove oil from between the links with this process.

Correct lubrication of the load chain on every chain block is necessary to prolong the life of your chain block for years as opposed to months, especially when used outdoors.

I hope this article has been beneficial to many and will help you keep your equipment in safe working order saving you time and money…something for free! Please follow the links to view products for sale.

Back to Business…

Wow, the last few weeks have been mega! We have hit new records in sales, company growth is expanding and we should have some very exciting news to reveal that will be discussed in a meeting tomorrow morning! -Hope to let you know soon…

We have recently gained excellent partners in the freight forwarding and deep sea shipping industries enabling us to provide excellent rates for export shipping. Another advantage is our local suppliers in the area enabling us to keep costs low when exporting as we do not have to get products shipped from all over the country in order to pack as one consignment. We are also now handling export paper work such as certificates of origin, customs clearance and insurance so the only thing you have to do is order the goods, sit back and relax!

This weeks we have just hooked up (pardon the pun) the UK’s biggest bill board company with 12 Lodestar three phase electric chain hoists to rig their bill boards. -More to come when the hoists have been delivered.

I was on a call with some of my connections in the industry and the feeling was mutual, the past month has been big on material handling equipment. We have recently started supplying Drum Handling Equipment such as DRUM STACKERS, DRUM LIFTERS, HYDRAULIC DRUM TRUCKS and more- click the links to check out our vast range. We have a model to suit most applications. The company have recently been working on a custom built requirement for a good customer out in Saudi Arabia designed and built in the UK to last 25+ years!

Yesterday we were in a meetings regarding craneage for a large nuclear power plant, unfortunately due to national security there is minimal i can say about this but it does give you a clear indication as to how experienced we are and it should fill you with confidence in ourselves, if it doesn’t, give us a try and we will show you courtesy, knowledge, customer service and a delivery service like no other.

-Have a good weekend readers, enjoy!
