Mobile Cranes for Installing a Hot Tub!

So as life moves on you tend to buy different things, I for one enjoy a dip in a Hot Tub and decided that after much anticipation I would go ahead and get one, there was lots to consider, the size, where I would install it, what would my partner think? After all they are not cheap!

Image

Hot Tub all rigged up! They lifted the tub using 2 x 3Tonne Webbing slings attached to another 2

The biggest issue was- how am I going to get it in to my back yard? The house is tall and there is no way of walking it round on trolleys. There was only one way, this also was not the cheapest, but we had no option and are glad to say everything went smoothly and swiftly.

Ainscough Crane Hire of Lancashire provided us with the most competitive price on the market for hire of a 35 Tonne crane with a lifting height of 44m, enough to get us over the house and in to the back yard, perfect. It was great to watch the crane do its thing as for being in the industry this was exciting for an engineering geek to see!

All plumed in and full up with water, it was time to add the chemicals and let it simmer, within 24 hours it was heated and ready for action, I had not seen myself so excited for years!

Offshore Rigging- Whats it really like?

Offshore Rigging can be a really exciting but also challenging job, however with some rewarding prospects such as high salaries with long holiday periods (but also intense working periods). Although living in the middle of the ocean on a windy oil rig is not the most beautiful of places one can still live with plenty of luxury, accommodation is thought to be somewhat as good as that of a five star hotel, bar the room service and beach! If you get seasickness- this ones not for you!

Offshore RiggingMany offshore riggers only pursue their career for a short period of time, this is most likely because they have either earnt enough money to be comfortable and enjoy life or they felt enough was enough and its time to do something else. Often I see ex riggers becoming rigging equipment salespersons or persons who are involved less directly and not actually out on the rigs miles out at sea away from their families and friends for extended periods.

The excitement of playing what is practically real life Meccano does look like something that would make any boy in to a man, that satisfaction you get from Meccano times by a million as you play it on a huge scale, that right there is every young boys dream! We’ll never grow up…

I don’t think I will ever get to experience life on deck Offshore simply because I love my home comforts too much- however I would take the opportunity for the weekend to be an Offshore Rigger and live life on the edge, I think it would be rather thrilling, what do you think??

Lifting Equipment Inspection

Inspection of any load rated Lifting Equipment is vital and should be undertaken between every 3-12 months depending upon the intensity of usage. Failure to inspect and certify lifting gear regularly by a qualified LOLER inspection body can result in your company not being covered by insurance in the event that the item involved was neglected from an inspection.

Should the unspeakable happen, the company involved may be sued or fined heavily, this can also negatively impact on the persons involved in organising the inspections and maintenance.

Inspection is very important as a qualified engineer that has competent inspection skills will easily identify any abnormalities very quickly and efficiently while understanding the implications that the abnormality can cause. Much like a doctor for lifting gear the inspector can assess the required issue and recommend the steps to take in order to correct the problem, this may be just a minor replacement part such as a safety catch or something more complex that would require the company the scrap the item and replace it if the cost of repair is close to or outweighs a new item. Intense usage demands reliable products and requires more frequent inspection and replacement of spare parts or a total new item.

Engine Cranes- How Do They Work?

Most commonly used in the automotive industry Engine Cranes were designed to lift, transport and lower engines with a hydraulic boom while being supported by a set of sturdy legs that feature wheels fitted for ease of transport once the engine had been removed from the bay.

Firstly the engine should be freed from any securing bolts and screws, then it should be rigged up using an engine sling, the crane can then be brought in with the stand wheeled under the load (under the car) the crane boom can be lowered using the handle that operates the hydraulic ram.

Once lowered the chain sling should be connected to the crane hook, the engine can now be raised using the handle that operates the hydraulic ram, pumping the handle raises the load, once clear of the engine bay the load can be transported and worked on.

For safety reasons the crane boom can only operate in an vertical operation, this is why the sturdy legs are positioned under the load to prevent the Engine Crane from tipping over when lifting or transporting.

Jib Cranes Explained

Lets use our imagination a little here, So you’ve got a manufacturing facility where for example you are loading large objects into a lathe that cannot be lifted by hand, you need a lifting solution. The best lifting solution for such a job?….A Jib Crane.

 Image

Jib cranes are floor or wall mounted cranes that can lift loads usually up to 5000kg (5TON) depending on the model. They have the ability to slew 360 degrees (motorized or manual). The usual setup is a combination of the jib crane and an electric or hand chain hoist on a push or electric travel beam trolley that runs along the Jib’s arm.

Buyers can customize their Jib cranes to suit their application such as arm length, Jib height, electric or manual slew, wall or floor mounted, articulated jib, over braced or under braced arms (detailed below), hoist specifications such as dual or single speed hoisting, maximum safe working load, the list goes on.

Over-braced or Under-braced? That is the question.

As a sales executive I am always asked by customers “what do you recommend?” I can recommend that you measure the headroom above the Jib arm, over braced means that the jib arm is supported by a support above the Jib arm, this increases the overall height of the Jib (but does not increase the height of the Jib arm itself). Under braced is where the Jib arm is supported from underneath, thus saving headroom where needs be. Alternatively if you have a wall nearby a Jib can easily be mounted using the correct fittings and bolted to the wall (providing the wall is strong enough) This is usually the most cost effective option if you are so lucky as to have a wall just where you require the crane.

Images below show the different supports you can specify when purchasing.
